Canonical released Ubuntu 12.10 on October 18th. Quantal Quetzal is the 17th release of the Ubuntu GNU/Linux distribution that will be supported until April 2014 (two years)

Canonical claims that new release brings overall improvements, updated applications and many new features.

The final release of Ubuntu distribution version 12.10 is expected on 18 October 2012, with support through April 2014.

The Ubuntu Development Summit for 12.10 started on 7 May and ended 11 May, 2012, where more of the features for 12.10 were decided upon.

The latest stable release of GIMP is v2.8 and it seems that it includes many changes, most of them are related to the user interface. This version is available for all main operating systems.
